In this post I’m going to share with you my Switched-on Schoolhouse review (Alpha Omega Publications) and I will show you an overview of what’s inside the curriculum. Maybe you need to know what’s in the curriculum before deciding of getting one.
In my last post I wrote about how I started home schooling (2009-2010) with my daughter in which I was totally clueless and unprepared.
A few weeks ago we went to the library and I checked a few books about home schooling. I was surprised to read the information how a parent(s) should be prepared in home schooling their kids. While reading the information, I felt how blessed am I through God’s leading in using the Switched-on-Schoolhouse Curriculum.
Through the book that I was reading I was surprised to find out that a home schooling instructor must set up a school calendar and a lesson plan. I found out that there are so many things to get ready for home schooling. If I had found this book before I would never dare to home school my daughter.
I believe God is all the way with me and my family. With Switched-on Schoolhouse curriculum all things that you need for home schooling is in the package. You don’t need to set up a school calendar and lesson plan. About 90% of the grading is done automatically — and how do you like that!
The elective subjects are bought separately from grade-subject package. I bought the 6th-grade subject package for my daughter and I had also bought the elective Health Quest software.
With Switched-on Schoolhouse curriculum each student has a computer and the instructor has her/his own computer too but it’s not necessary. If you only have one student, one computer is fine. You just need to do the grading when the child is not using the computer.
If you have multiple students, and the the instructor has her/his own computer also (the main computer), he/she will have instant access to the main computer (instructor’s computer) in case one of the students need help.
The only thing that I had trouble with Switched-on Schoolhouse — is the installing / or setting up the curriculum in the computer on the very first time. And it took an hour to wait in the phone to get help if your problem won’t get solved in the lower level of SOS support. I had no problem of getting help from the SOS lower support. If the lower support can’t find solution to your problem they will redirect your call to high support which will take 45 minutes to an hour of waiting in the phone to get help. But after it was set up everything was fine.
Had I have only one student to work with maybe the installation was a breeze. But since I had 2 other students from another family and we needed to network the computers we had a hard time of installing the programs. Maybe the installation problem could have been solved in the SOS lower support if I only had one student.
The other thing that I didn’t like is the size of the video that is available for experiment. There is no option to enlarge it. But the kids and my husband were able to manage in finishing the experiments.
